Gmail in Mail.app Uses IMAP by Default Now

Thursday 17 January 2008

Another nice change in the 1.1.3 firmware update is that the Gmail portion of the Mail.app on the iPhone and iPod Touch now use IMAP (rather than POP) by default. Google posted (Important changes to email deletion on the iPhone mail client) this to their blog shortly after the MacWorld Keynote speech:

There’s a new software update for the iPhone. The next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone will be updated to version 1.1.3 of Apple’s software. It has a nice new feature — the built-in Mail app on the iPhone will now use IMAP to access your Gmail account, rather than POP, like it used to. IMAP is way better — it keeps your mail in sync wherever you read it. If you read a message on your iPhone, it will be marked as read in your Gmail account. If you move a message to a folder on your iPhone, it will be moved to that label in Gmail. If you delete a message on your iPhone, it will be moved to the Trash in Gmail and permanently deleted in 30 days. This is different than what used to happen! Before, deleting a message on the iPhone had no effect on your Gmail account. But now, delete actually deletes! :)

This is great. IMAP is certainly a better way to manage your mail. I am very happy that they (Apple or Google - whoever actually made the change) changed from POP to IMAP.

MacWorld Keynote

Wednesday 16 January 2008

Steve Jobs’ MacWorld Keynote speech was yesterday. There wasn’t a lot of iPhone/iPod Touch news. No new versions of either gadget. Apple did release a new version of the iPhone/iPod Touch firmware (version 1.1.3).

This new version brings the ability to move around the home buttons, and a new enhanced maps feature. Apple also released a video to show off the new features. Check it out here: January ’08: Enhanced Maps and more.

This update also allows iPod Touch users to add some of the applications that are on the iPhone to the iPod Touch. You can add Mail, Maps, Web Clips, Customizable Home Screen, Stocks, Notes, and Weather to the iPod Touch. This functionality will come at a cost though. In order to get this, you’ll need to spend $20. All new iPod Touches will come with this functionality for free, but existing owners will have to pay for this. This is a little disappointing. Click here for more details about the iPod Touch additions.
Other than that, there wasn’t much iPhone or iPod Touch news during the MacWorld keynote.

3G iPhone Coming Next Year?

Thursday 29 November 2007

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said that “You’ll have it next year” when he was discussing the 3G version of the Apple iPhone. He said this at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. He did not comment on exactly when it would come out, or how much it would cost. He also didn’t elaborate on how fast the 3G speeds would reach. Steve Jobs had hinted at a 3G iPhone during the iPhone launching in UK announcement in September.

Of course, now the rumors will spread about the 3G phone being available at MacWorld in January.

If your looking to get an iPhone, but are unhappy with the EDGE network, I would wait to see what develops. The 3G network has always been faster than the EDGE network.

iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 Aftermath

Friday 28 September 2007

So… You’ve heard about the Apple iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 update. Apple had suggested that they may leave some hacked iPhones a unusable. So, what works and what doesn’t?

It looks like anyone who used jailbreak and third-party apps, will need to restore their iPhones. There have been reports that the update gave an error which forced the user to completely restore their iPhone. Just make sure that you have backed up any pictures taken with the iPhone before updating.

It also appears that non-iTunes ringtones no longer work. That really stinks. I think that someone will find a way around this, but paying twice to use a ringtone from Apple is silly. That second $0.99 is ALL profit for the recording companies.

There are a few reports of bricked (non working) iPhones out there. I wonder if people will find a way around this issue too.

So, it looks like if you used jailbreak to hack your iPhone (to install third-party apps), you should be okay (once you restore and find an update the your jailbreak procedure). If you inlocked your SIM card, you may have other issues. Please stay tuned to this and other iPhone sites to see the latest.

Update:  It is reported that some Apple Geniuses are unbricking iPhones.  This has not been confirmed, but if your is bricked, you may want to give it a shot.
