Apple Released 16 GB iPhone/32 GB iPod Touch

Tuesday 5 February 2008

Apple has (quietly) released a 16 GB version of the iPhone and a 32 GB version of the iPod Touch. Both sell for $499.

Many people thought that the 16 GB iPhone would be released at the MacWorld Expo in early January. It wasn’t, but it’s nice to see that this version has come out. I don’t think that many people have expected the 32 GB version of the iPod Touch, it is a nice little surprise.

I haven’t checked to see if you can get either of these free yet. I will check tonight to see if you can. It is still certain that you can get the 8 GB iPhone and 8/16 GB iPod Touch for free.  I’m sure that they will add the new versions shortly.  I will post here as soon as you can get these two new items for free.

You can get a free Apple iPhone (or iPod Touch), just like I did. The steps are extremely easy:
  1. Fill out a short form with your information.
  2. Complete a simple exclusive offer or two.
  3. Have a few friends do the same.
  4. Click here (iPhone) or here (iPod Touch) to get started.

Gmail in Mail.app Uses IMAP by Default Now

Thursday 17 January 2008

Another nice change in the 1.1.3 firmware update is that the Gmail portion of the Mail.app on the iPhone and iPod Touch now use IMAP (rather than POP) by default. Google posted (Important changes to email deletion on the iPhone mail client) this to their blog shortly after the MacWorld Keynote speech:

There’s a new software update for the iPhone. The next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone will be updated to version 1.1.3 of Apple’s software. It has a nice new feature — the built-in Mail app on the iPhone will now use IMAP to access your Gmail account, rather than POP, like it used to. IMAP is way better — it keeps your mail in sync wherever you read it. If you read a message on your iPhone, it will be marked as read in your Gmail account. If you move a message to a folder on your iPhone, it will be moved to that label in Gmail. If you delete a message on your iPhone, it will be moved to the Trash in Gmail and permanently deleted in 30 days. This is different than what used to happen! Before, deleting a message on the iPhone had no effect on your Gmail account. But now, delete actually deletes! :)

This is great. IMAP is certainly a better way to manage your mail. I am very happy that they (Apple or Google - whoever actually made the change) changed from POP to IMAP.

MacWorld Keynote

Wednesday 16 January 2008

Steve Jobs’ MacWorld Keynote speech was yesterday. There wasn’t a lot of iPhone/iPod Touch news. No new versions of either gadget. Apple did release a new version of the iPhone/iPod Touch firmware (version 1.1.3).

This new version brings the ability to move around the home buttons, and a new enhanced maps feature. Apple also released a video to show off the new features. Check it out here: January ’08: Enhanced Maps and more.

This update also allows iPod Touch users to add some of the applications that are on the iPhone to the iPod Touch. You can add Mail, Maps, Web Clips, Customizable Home Screen, Stocks, Notes, and Weather to the iPod Touch. This functionality will come at a cost though. In order to get this, you’ll need to spend $20. All new iPod Touches will come with this functionality for free, but existing owners will have to pay for this. This is a little disappointing. Click here for more details about the iPod Touch additions.
Other than that, there wasn’t much iPhone or iPod Touch news during the MacWorld keynote.

The MacWorld Expo is next week. Any thoughts on what will be shown?

I’m almost positive that a 16 GB version of the iPhone will show up and the long awaited iPhone/iPod Touch SDK will show up.
