iPhone Firmware 1.1.2 Coming on Friday

Thursday 8 November 2007

Apple has confirmed that this Friday, they will be releasing Firmware version 1.1.2 for the iPhone. This update coincides with the UK launch of the iPhone. The update is expected to include wider language support with international keyboards and special character keys, and access to The Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots for UK users.

There is no word yet on whether this update will fix the TIFF exploit in Safari that has allowed users to “jailbreak” their iPhone (and iPod Touch). We can only expect that Apple will seal this exploit.

There is also no word on whether there will be an update to the iPod Touch tomorrow. If they do fix the TIFF exploit for the iPhone, you can expect them to fix it on the iPod Touch too.

This firmware update will be available through iTunes.

iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 Aftermath

Friday 28 September 2007

So… You’ve heard about the Apple iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 update. Apple had suggested that they may leave some hacked iPhones a unusable. So, what works and what doesn’t?

It looks like anyone who used jailbreak and third-party apps, will need to restore their iPhones. There have been reports that the update gave an error which forced the user to completely restore their iPhone. Just make sure that you have backed up any pictures taken with the iPhone before updating.

It also appears that non-iTunes ringtones no longer work. That really stinks. I think that someone will find a way around this, but paying twice to use a ringtone from Apple is silly. That second $0.99 is ALL profit for the recording companies.

There are a few reports of bricked (non working) iPhones out there. I wonder if people will find a way around this issue too.

So, it looks like if you used jailbreak to hack your iPhone (to install third-party apps), you should be okay (once you restore and find an update the your jailbreak procedure). If you inlocked your SIM card, you may have other issues. Please stay tuned to this and other iPhone sites to see the latest.

Update:  It is reported that some Apple Geniuses are unbricking iPhones.  This has not been confirmed, but if your is bricked, you may want to give it a shot.

You can get a free Apple iPhone (or iPod Touch), just like I did. The steps are extremely easy:
  1. Fill out a short form with your information.
  2. Complete a simple exclusive offer or two.
  3. Have a few friends do the same.
  4. Click here (iPhone) or here (iPod Touch) to get started.
