Native Google Applications?

Friday 16 May 2008

According to iPodNN (Google aims to have native iPhone apps at launch), Google is planning on releasing native application on the iPhone when the 2.0 firmware is released this summer.  There is no word on what these applications may be.

This is exciting that Google is behind the iPhone SDK.  Google has always created some great application, I can’t wait to see what they come up with on the iPhone.

You can get a free Apple iPhone (or iPod Touch), just like I did. The steps are extremely easy:
  1. Fill out a short form with your information.
  2. Complete a simple exclusive offer or two.
  3. Have a few friends do the same.
  4. Click here (iPhone) or here (iPod Touch) to get started.

Google Search Sees Huge Surge from iPhone Users

Monday 18 February 2008

iPodNN has reported (Google: iPhone searches dwarf rivals) that Google has seen a huge surge in mobile searches from iPhone users.  Google must be raking in the cash from their search advertising.

iPhone users are much more likely to use Google to search for items while they are out and about.  It may mean that Google is so well integrated into the iPhone that using another search engine is a hassle.

I think that  Google and the iPhone/iPod Touch make the perfect combination for searching the web (when out of the house).

Gmail in Mail.app Uses IMAP by Default Now

Thursday 17 January 2008

Another nice change in the 1.1.3 firmware update is that the Gmail portion of the Mail.app on the iPhone and iPod Touch now use IMAP (rather than POP) by default. Google posted (Important changes to email deletion on the iPhone mail client) this to their blog shortly after the MacWorld Keynote speech:

There’s a new software update for the iPhone. The next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone will be updated to version 1.1.3 of Apple’s software. It has a nice new feature — the built-in Mail app on the iPhone will now use IMAP to access your Gmail account, rather than POP, like it used to. IMAP is way better — it keeps your mail in sync wherever you read it. If you read a message on your iPhone, it will be marked as read in your Gmail account. If you move a message to a folder on your iPhone, it will be moved to that label in Gmail. If you delete a message on your iPhone, it will be moved to the Trash in Gmail and permanently deleted in 30 days. This is different than what used to happen! Before, deleting a message on the iPhone had no effect on your Gmail account. But now, delete actually deletes! :)

This is great. IMAP is certainly a better way to manage your mail. I am very happy that they (Apple or Google - whoever actually made the change) changed from POP to IMAP.

New Gmail Interface for iPhone/iPod Touch

Tuesday 15 January 2008

New Gmail Interface

Yesterday, Google announced (New Gmail for the iPhone) a new Gmail interface for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

One of the new features is the auto-complete on email addresses. Now, you can add new email addresses in only a few keystrokes.  This new interface is a bit smoother than the old generic mobile interface. It is also much more response (thanks to the use of AJAX).

I noticed this yesterday and love the changes.

‘iPhone’ Fastest Rising Search Result on Google

Friday 14 December 2007

‘iPhone’ was the fastest rising search word on Google this year. This is according to Google Zeitgeist (2007). ‘iPhone’ ranked higher in both the U.S. and internationally. It beat out terms like: ‘webkins’, ‘tmz’, ‘club penguin’, ‘dailymotion’, etc…

Not only is ‘iPhone’ the fastest rising search term, it is also number six in the Google News Most Popular Searches.

This just shows that since the iPhone’s announcement (earlier this January), its popularity has skyrocketed.
