Gmail in Mail.app Uses IMAP by Default Now

Thursday 17 January 2008

Another nice change in the 1.1.3 firmware update is that the Gmail portion of the Mail.app on the iPhone and iPod Touch now use IMAP (rather than POP) by default. Google posted (Important changes to email deletion on the iPhone mail client) this to their blog shortly after the MacWorld Keynote speech:

There’s a new software update for the iPhone. The next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone will be updated to version 1.1.3 of Apple’s software. It has a nice new feature — the built-in Mail app on the iPhone will now use IMAP to access your Gmail account, rather than POP, like it used to. IMAP is way better — it keeps your mail in sync wherever you read it. If you read a message on your iPhone, it will be marked as read in your Gmail account. If you move a message to a folder on your iPhone, it will be moved to that label in Gmail. If you delete a message on your iPhone, it will be moved to the Trash in Gmail and permanently deleted in 30 days. This is different than what used to happen! Before, deleting a message on the iPhone had no effect on your Gmail account. But now, delete actually deletes! :)

This is great. IMAP is certainly a better way to manage your mail. I am very happy that they (Apple or Google - whoever actually made the change) changed from POP to IMAP.

New Gmail Interface for iPhone/iPod Touch

Tuesday 15 January 2008

New Gmail Interface

Yesterday, Google announced (New Gmail for the iPhone) a new Gmail interface for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

One of the new features is the auto-complete on email addresses. Now, you can add new email addresses in only a few keystrokes.  This new interface is a bit smoother than the old generic mobile interface. It is also much more response (thanks to the use of AJAX).

I noticed this yesterday and love the changes.

Google Now iPhone Friendly(er)

Wednesday 5 December 2007

Google has redesigned their homepage for the iPhone/iPod Touch. They had mobile (iPhone) versions of Gmail, Google Docs, and others, but the Google homepage was still the same old thing. Now, they redirect iPhone users to a special page which is designed specifically for the iPhone.

This should make using your favorite search engine even easier. Enjoy!

iPhone/iPod Touch Firmware 1.1.2 Released

Friday 9 November 2007

Apple released firmware version 1.1.2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This release comes just before the UK launch of the iPhone. This update weighs in at a hefty 160 MBs. I haven’t installed the update yet, but I will once I get home. Here are some notes from MacNN about this update:

  • brings support for Language, Keyboards, Asian Font, and Region Format
  • turning on multiple keyboards places globe key on the left of the space bar to allow users to cycle through various keyboards
  • no search functionality in mail (yet)
  • no direct support for Google IMAP accounts (still have to bypass the Gmail setup)
  • no support for sending SMS to multiple recipients
  • using AppSnap for “jailbreak” no longer works
  • Apple’s own documentation (decompress via StuffIt Expander) has no details, just pointing users to the iPhone site, security update site, etc.
  • users report the ‘Add Event’ function was added to to the iPod touch calendar application.
  • the update also shows the iPod battery charge level/status from within iTunes

We’re sure the the AppTap crew will have this new version of the firmware figured out shortly (if they don’t already).

Got My iPod Touch - With Proof Pics!

My iPhone 4 Free Homepage iPod Touch Home

I decided a little while ago to attempt to get a free iPod Touch (16 GB) to go along with my iPhone. Well, it arrived yesterday. As you can see from the image above, I have already jailbroken the iPod (since jailbreaking won’t brick it). The other image shows this site on the iPod Touch (which formats automatically for the iPhone/iPod Touch).

This was very easy for me to do. I was able to get a number of referrals from my friends. I also traded for a few referrals. If you don’t know much about referral trading, I will cover that in a upcoming post.

I am very happy that I have both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
