Native Google Applications?

Friday 16 May 2008

According to iPodNN (Google aims to have native iPhone apps at launch), Google is planning on releasing native application on the iPhone when the 2.0 firmware is released this summer.  There is no word on what these applications may be.

This is exciting that Google is behind the iPhone SDK.  Google has always created some great application, I can’t wait to see what they come up with on the iPhone.

You can get a free Apple iPhone (or iPod Touch), just like I did. The steps are extremely easy:
  1. Fill out a short form with your information.
  2. Complete a simple exclusive offer or two.
  3. Have a few friends do the same.
  4. Click here (iPhone) or here (iPod Touch) to get started.

iPhone Denial-of-Service Bug

Thursday 7 February 2008

iPodNN is reporting (iPhone denial-of-service bug surfaces) that an iPhone Denial-of-Service Bug has been uncovered. According to SecurityFocus, this issue exists in both the 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 firmware. There is no mention on whether this affects the iPod Touch.

Some may see this issue as a blessing. It may mean that a site like JailBreakMe can work on the 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 firmware.

Apple will most likely fix this issue in their next firmware update. We can only wait to see.

MacWorld Keynote

Wednesday 16 January 2008

Steve Jobs’ MacWorld Keynote speech was yesterday. There wasn’t a lot of iPhone/iPod Touch news. No new versions of either gadget. Apple did release a new version of the iPhone/iPod Touch firmware (version 1.1.3).

This new version brings the ability to move around the home buttons, and a new enhanced maps feature. Apple also released a video to show off the new features. Check it out here: January ’08: Enhanced Maps and more.

This update also allows iPod Touch users to add some of the applications that are on the iPhone to the iPod Touch. You can add Mail, Maps, Web Clips, Customizable Home Screen, Stocks, Notes, and Weather to the iPod Touch. This functionality will come at a cost though. In order to get this, you’ll need to spend $20. All new iPod Touches will come with this functionality for free, but existing owners will have to pay for this. This is a little disappointing. Click here for more details about the iPod Touch additions.
Other than that, there wasn’t much iPhone or iPod Touch news during the MacWorld keynote.

iPhone a Big Disappointment?

Tuesday 18 December 2007

PC World has named the iPhone as one of The Biggest Technology Disappointments of 2007. It reached number 5 on the list still behind Yahoo, Facebook Beacon, the High-Def Format War, and Microsoft Windows Vista.

The editors there believe that the iPhone itself is a nifty piece of hardware, their complaint is more with AT&T’s broadband service and the (too soon) $200 price drop. They also point out the disappointment (and anger) from some users who hacked their iPhone only to have it bricked by a firmware update.

These three points from the editors are extremely valid points. I believe that the device (hardware) still sits that the top of my favorite items this decade (not only this year). I think a purchase of the iPhone (or get one free!) is still very much worth it.

There are reports that this latest firmware has already been hacked. But, I haven’t tried this yet.
