Over 25% of iPhones unlocked
Tuesday 29 January 2008A new article (Analysis: Over 25% of iPhones unlocked) on MacNN states that over 25% of all the iPhones in the United States are used on networks other than AT&Ts network. This means that over a quarter of all iPhones were either unlocked or abandoned (when bricked). This is very interesting.
Apple has never been very forthcoming with the number of unlocked iPhones, but Reuters came up with this analysis by looking at the discrepancies between Apple’s numbers and AT&T’s numbers.
This news doesn’t really apply to getting a free iPhone, but it is interesting news. If you don’t want to switch to AT&T and want to unlock your (free) iPhone, just know that you are not alone. Also, according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) you are technically allowed to unlock your iPhone.
