iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 Aftermath

Friday 28 September 2007

So… You’ve heard about the Apple iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 update. Apple had suggested that they may leave some hacked iPhones a unusable. So, what works and what doesn’t?

It looks like anyone who used jailbreak and third-party apps, will need to restore their iPhones. There have been reports that the update gave an error which forced the user to completely restore their iPhone. Just make sure that you have backed up any pictures taken with the iPhone before updating.

It also appears that non-iTunes ringtones no longer work. That really stinks. I think that someone will find a way around this, but paying twice to use a ringtone from Apple is silly. That second $0.99 is ALL profit for the recording companies.

There are a few reports of bricked (non working) iPhones out there. I wonder if people will find a way around this issue too.

So, it looks like if you used jailbreak to hack your iPhone (to install third-party apps), you should be okay (once you restore and find an update the your jailbreak procedure). If you inlocked your SIM card, you may have other issues. Please stay tuned to this and other iPhone sites to see the latest.

Update:  It is reported that some Apple Geniuses are unbricking iPhones.  This has not been confirmed, but if your is bricked, you may want to give it a shot.

VoIP on the Apple iPhone

Thursday 27 September 2007

A company, Truphone, planned to demonstrate yesterday that Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is possible on the iPhone (over Wi-Fi). This technology allows you to make calls (many for free) to many landline phone numbers (Truphone’s rates). This would mean that you wouldn’t use your AT&T minutes for many calls.

There is no word on how this demonstration went.  They planned to demonstrate this technology at DEMOfall 07. All of the accounts that we could find were from before the demonstration, and not after.

This demonstration was just that though.  They are not prepared to release this technology to the public yet.  But it shows that VoIP on an iPhone is possible.   It also shows that this technology is most likely coming to an iPhone near you sometime soon.
